Guide to the Various Kinds of Bedding

A list of fundamental terms and items.

Leading Sheet – Commonly used in North America, but unusual in Europe, a leading sheet, likewise understood as a flat sheet, is the sheet that separates you from your comforter, blanket or quilt. In Europe (and extremely slowly capturing on in the United States), the bed linen replaces the leading sheet.

Bottom Sheet – A bottom sheet, or fitted sheet, is the sheet with the flexible edge that fits over your bed mattress– thus the name bottom or fitted sheet. As today’s mattresses have grown much thicker, it’s important to check the measurements before buying a fitted sheet to make sure it will extend all the method over your mattress.

Coverlet – A coverlet is an ornamental material covering that does not touch the floor and usually does not cover the pillows. Woven coverlets and quilts fall into this classification.

Bedspread – A bedspread is comparable to a coverlet– a thin, decorative covering– but it generally covers the entire bed and touches the flooring.

Cotton, chenille, wool or polyester prevail bedspread products.

Blanket – Blankets are used to include warmth. While some people use a blanket by itself, many others choose to top the blanket with a more attractive quilt, comforter or duvet. Blankets are most typically made of wool, cotton, polyester, microfiber plush or a blend of fibers.

Comforter – A comforter is a bedspread stuffed with fibers or down for heat, and after that stitched on all four sides. Most likely the most common bed topper in North America, comforters are readily available in an almost endless series of colors, patterns and styles, and are a major decorative accent in the bed room. The majority of are made from either cotton or polyester.
